Mapping transferable skills for a German industry switch
When you change industries in Germany, hiring managers do not need a longer list of soft skills. They need to see decisions you already made that resemble decisions in their world.
Start by writing down five concrete episodes from your current or previous role: a budget you influenced, a conflict you settled, a process you shortened, a customer complaint you owned end to end, a deadline you renegotiated with evidence. For each episode, name the constraint, your action, and the result in numbers or dates if you have them.
Next, open two job descriptions in the target industry. Highlight verbs that match your episodes — “coordinate suppliers,” “brief a team,” “reconcile inventory,” “prepare a status report for management.” Where the match is real, keep it. Where you are stretching (for example, calling store stock work “supply-chain strategy”), drop it. German readers notice inflation quickly.
Finally, rewrite each episode in the vocabulary of the new field without inventing titles you never held. A retail lead who resolved a stock discrepancy across locations can speak about multi-site inventory control; they should not claim warehouse design experience they never had.
Bring that evidence sheet to your consultation. In Industry Change Onboarding we use it to decide which target roles are honest — and which ones still need more preparation before you apply.
