What German employers ask career changers
Interview panels in Germany return to a handful of questions when a Lebenslauf shows a sector jump. Practising vague enthusiasm is not enough; they want specifics.
Why leave your current industry? Answer with a constraint or curiosity grounded in work you have seen, not with “I needed a challenge.” Example: you spent two years coordinating external technicians and want to move into a role where that coordination is the core of the job, not a side task.
What transfers? Point to one or two episodes from your evidence sheet. Stop after the proof. Do not pile on adjectives.
What will you not know on day one? Name a tool, regulation, or customer type you must learn, and how you plan to learn it in the first month. Honesty here builds more trust than pretending the switch is seamless.
Why this employer? Reference something concrete from their work — a service region, a client type, a public project — that connects to your target role. Generic praise for “innovation” wastes the question.
Our Interview Prep for Career Changers sessions rehearse these four until your answers sound like yours, not like a script. If an interview is already booked, bring the invitation and job description to the session.
